Which Ranthambore Zones Are Open on Your Travel Date?
The short answer
Ranthambore runs a fixed weekday rotation all year round: on Tuesdays only core zones 1–5 operate, on Wednesdays only buffer zones 6–10 operate, and on every other day all ten zones run. Separately, core zones 1–5 close completely for the monsoon from 1 July to 30 September while buffer zones 6–10 stay open. Combining the two rules produces one consequence that is easy to miss: a Tuesday between July and September has no safari at all, because Tuesday only ever runs zones 1–5 and those zones are shut for the season.
Two separate rules decide whether a safari runs on the date you are looking at. Most booking sites mention one of them and quietly skip the other, which is how people end up holding an enquiry for a date on which the park runs nothing. Here is the whole thing in one place.
Rule 1 — the weekday rotation, which applies every month
Ranthambore rotates which half of the park runs on two days of the week. This is not seasonal — it holds in October and it holds in April:
- Tuesday — core zones 1–5 run. Buffer zones 6–10 are closed.
- Wednesday — buffer zones 6–10 run. Core zones 1–5 are closed.
- Every other day — all ten zones run.
So if you specifically want the core zones — the lake circuit around Zone 1 and Zone 3 — a Wednesday is the one weekday to avoid. If you are heading for the buffer, avoid Tuesday.
Rule 2 — the monsoon closure, 1 July to 30 September
Core zones 1–5 shut for the whole monsoon season. This is a conservation closure during the breeding season, and it is not negotiable or bookable. Buffer zones 6–10 keep running right through it, which is why July–September trips are still possible — they are simply buffer-only trips.
Where the two rules collide
Apply the monsoon closure on top of the weekday rotation and one date type disappears entirely. Tuesday only ever runs zones 1–5. From July to September, zones 1–5 are closed. There is therefore nothing left to run:

What this does not decide: which zone you actually get
This is the part worth being blunt about, because it is where a lot of booking sites are misleading. Which zones are *open* on a date is a fixed, knowable rule — the one above. Which zone *you* are allotted is a completely separate decision made by the Forest Department at the moment your permit is issued.
No agency, including this one, can guarantee you Zone 3 or Zone 4. What you can do is state a preference — core zones 1–5, buffer zones 6–10, or any open zone — and that request is carried forward with your booking. Anyone promising you a named zone in advance is either misinformed or telling you what you want to hear.
Safari shifts on an open day
On any day the park runs, there are two shifts — a morning shift starting roughly 6:30 AM and an evening shift starting roughly 2:30 PM. Exact gate timings shift by an hour or so across the year as sunrise and sunset move, so treat those as approximate and confirm the timing on your permit.
